While the exact dates for IPL 2024 are yet to be finalized, taking a cue from the previous years, the 2023 schedule was revealed in February, shortly before the March 31 inaugural match.

For the forthcoming season, it’s expected to commence in late March 2024, spanning around two months of electrifying cricket action.

IPL 2024 Date & Venues

The potential clash between the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Loksabha elections poses a challenge for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to organize the IPL’s 17th season. According to ESPNcricinfo the T20 World Cup 2024 is projected to be held from June 4 to June 30 in the USA and West Indies, the Loksabha elections scheduled for May-June. Given these circumstances, BCCI faces a tight window to host IPL 2024.

IPL 2024 Auction Base Price For Each Team

The precise date for the IPL 2024 auction remains uncertain, but drawing insights from past seasons, the IPL 2023 auction took place in Bangalore on December 16, 2022, approximately three months before the competition’s commencement. Similarly, the IPL 2024 auction might be held towards the end of 2023.

With a budget of Rs 90 crore allocated to each IPL franchise, teams strive to curate a potent squad blending talents from around the world. The roster includes capped and uncapped Indian players as well as international talents. While teams aren’t obligated to exhaust the entire budget, a minimum of 75% (Rs 60 crore) must be allocated to players. Notably, the top five players could account for 30%-40% a significant portion of a franchise’s expenditure.

The number of players up for auction isn’t set in stone and can vary annually. The count is contingent on player registrations, provided they are endorsed by their respective cricket boards or countries. These players encompass a range of backgrounds, including capped, uncapped, and associate cricket nations. The player’s origin holds little significance compared to the category they belong to.

Nevertheless, each IPL team is limited to featuring a maximum of eight foreign players, with only four permitted to take the field in the playing 11.

IPL 2024: Broadcasting Rights

The broadcasting rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) have been secured by Star India, Viacom18, and Times Internet for a span of five years, from 2023 to 2027. Star India clinched the television rights with a staggering bid of Rs 23,575 crore, while Viacom18 secured the internet rights with an equally impressive bid of Rs 23,758 crore.

The distribution of IPL’s media rights for the 2023-2027 period unfolded through an e-auction split into four packages. Star India emerged victorious in Package A for television rights. Package B encompassed digital rights for the Indian subcontinent, which were claimed by Viacom18.

Package C encompassed digital rights for select matches, including the opening and final games, three playoffs, and weekend doubleheaders. Viacom18 secured this package, encompassing 18-20 high-profile matches from each edition over the subsequent five years.

Package D incorporated international media rights for the IPL over the next five years. Consequently, while TV broadcasts can be enjoyed on Star Sports, digital viewing will be available through platforms like Jio Cinema or Voot.

IPL 2024 Auction Player Retention Rules

Considering the forthcoming auction’s reduced scale compared to the 2022 edition, all ten IPL teams are keen on retaining the core of their squads. Promising players who have shown potential are likely to remain with their respective teams. Nonetheless, some players may be released.

Released players have the option to enter the auction pool and potentially join a new franchise or be reclaimed by their former team at a reduced price. Each team can retain a maximum of three capped Indian players and up to two foreign or uncapped Indian players. The Right to Match (RTM) option allows teams to match an offer and retain a player.

Different Categories Of Player In The IPL 2024 Auctions

The IPL player pool can be categorized into three groups:

Capped Players: These are Indian players who have represented the national senior squad in any format.

Uncapped Players: This category comprises domestic Indian players who haven’t yet made their mark on the senior national team.

Non-Indian/Foreign/Overseas Participants: This inclusive category involves players from various cricketing nations, whether capped, uncapped, or representing associate cricket nations from nearby countries.

Notably, an IPL team’s composition can include a maximum of eight foreign players, with only four allowed to play simultaneously in the starting eleven.

As the countdown to IPL 2024 begins, cricket enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the schedule, venues, and other exciting details that will shape this thrilling edition of the Indian Premier League.
